Cappella Bonajuto

Fra le più antiche testimonianze catanesi scampate a terremoti ed eruzioni, la Cappella Bonajuto è un piccolo gioiello nel quartiere della Civita, esempio d’architettura siciliana di tarda età bizantina. Fu costruito nel IX secolo come chiesa, nel 1300 diventò cappella privata della famiglia Bonajuto, giunta nell’isola dalla Spagna. Ha pure ispirato un celebre dipinto di Houel, oggi all’Ermitage.

La cappella Bonajuto è stata restaurata da Paolo Orsi e Sebastiano Agati negli anni trenta. Oggi è visitabile e spesso affittata per fini espositivi e conferenze nonché come luogo per eventi.

Among the oldest examples of Catania that survived earthquakes and eruptions, there is this little jewel in the Civita district, an example of Sicilian architecture from the late Byzantine age. It was built in the 9th century as a church, in 1300 it became the private chapel of the Bonajuto’s family, who arrived on the island from Spain. It also inspired a famous painting by Houel, now in the Hermitage.

The chapel was restored by Paolo Orsi and Sebastiano Agati in the thirties. Today it can be visited and often rented for exhibition and conference purposes as well as a venue for events.
